Kevin's Life Story

First of all, I want to thank you for listening to 106 WCOD’s “Kevin & Co.” every weekday afternoon from 3-7 p.m.   I really love hanging out with you on the radio and playing your favorite music to sing along with.   Plus, I try to fill you in on what’s going on in the world that you may have missed and give you a chance to win some great prizes each day with the original, world-famous…“Impossible Question”!

Another thing I want to clear up is a question that I’m asked all the time: “Who’s the Co.?”  Well, the answer is…YOU!  You’re the “Co.” in “Kevin & Co.”!  This is your show, too!  Feel free to reach out anytime with your questions, comments or just to say hello!  You can call 888-770-WCOD (9263), e-mail me at kevin@106wcod.com or you can get my Facebook link by going to 106wcod.com and clicking on “Kevin & Co.”

Now, here’s a little info on the man behind the microphone: I was born on October 6, 1970 in the city of New Bedford, MA.  I lived there for most of my life, not moving to the Cape until 1997.  I did pretty well in school…and by the way, I went to Catholic schools through 9th grade so I obviously have some swollen knuckles and long ear lobes due to the nuns who were my teachers!  Hard to believe in this day and age with all of the quick and easy lawsuits, but back in the day when you ran home after school and told your Mom & Dad that Sister Loretta hit you in school, the first thing they’d say is:  “Well, you must have deserved it!”

When I was young, I loved to sing and play my guitar!  In fact, I performed in many plays, musicals and festivals throughout New England as a kid.  My biggest highlights in this arena were being on “Community Auditions” on WBZ-TV 4 with Dave Maynard and beating the children of the big 70’s & 80’s singing group, “Tavares” in a talent competition!

When I graduated from high school, I decided to take some time off from school to become a restaurant manager.   Bad move!  I soon found myself without a job and with no direction.  So after getting some great advice from a college councilor, I decided to go in one of two directions: an EMT or a radio DJ.  And since I thought I could pick up more chicks as a radio DJ…ding-ding-ding…radio DJ won!

I started in radio in 1989 at my hometown stations: FUN 107 & WBSM.  After many years there I went to WHYN-AM & FM in Springfield, MA for a short time before returning to FUN 107.  Then I was fired…oops!  But I soon found myself on the Cape at 96.3 The Rose where I worked until 2003.  From there I went to Portsmouth, NH to work at WERZ.  Then in 2005, I came home to Cape Cod when the opportunity opened up at 106 WCOD and I’ve been happy ever since!

In my 20 years in radio, (did I just say 20 years?!) I’ve held just about every position you could have in the business.  I’ve been an intern, promotions assistant, on-air personality, talk show host, news and sports reporter, promotions director, marketing director, morning show host and program director.  In fact, at one point in my career I was the fish reporter…updating the community on what types of fish were sold at auction that day, how many pounds were sold and the price they were sold for.  (I used to love the last line of each report:  “I’m Kevin Matthews…WBSM Fish!”)

Now a couple of quick personal notes: I am married to my best friend in the world…and I feel pretty lucky to be able to say that!  Her name is Rachel.  We’ve been together since 2000 and got married on September 4, 2005.  We have a great home in Centerville and a 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier named Penny, who is the smartest and most loving dog in the world (except when she freaks out and barks all night long during a thunderstorm or wakes me up at 5:30 in the morning just because she feels like it!)
